Sand artist, animation director, performer and puppeteer are a few of the many hats that the Hong Kong multidisciplinary artist Hoi Chiu wears. Coming into prominence in the 1990s, Hoi Chiu is known for his emotionally engaging narratives and unique multimedia aesthetics. With rich experience in directing and performing, he has dedicated his theatrical productions to explore the complexity of humanity and its interrelation with and within the social environment. Hoi Chiu has integrated painting and performance, materiality and bodily movement in his well-celebrated sand art, reappraising the relationship between the static and the performative in contemporary art. He has been invited for live performance at international festivals and art happenings all over the world, including Brussels, New Zealand, Australia, England, Canada and many cities in Asia. Recently the artist has actively engaged in sand animation and film production, partaking in the cross-disciplinary cultural sites with his perpetually diverse artistic vocabularies.
